Be kind and love always
Everyone’s looking for love, but love is a choice and love is something we must give to ourselves before we can give to others.
In this time where we talk about being kind, and as we are in February celebrating Valentines and love in a wider context, I wanted to take a moment to record some thoughts around the topic of love.
There are different kinds of love, we’ve sung about them in different ways, we’ve made films about it, we’ve written books and articles around it. We’ve talked about it, some have fallen in love and others have fallen out of love. Love to me is a powerful force. When you love someone beyond what they have done, or through the mess they have found themselves it has to power to pull them back from the grave and all the way through.
I had written a whole other script for this podcast episode and I almost didn’t record this, but due to recent events with Love Island host Caroline Flack and some of the conversations that have sparked as a result of it, I decided it was worth taking a few moments to share around this topic.
I have various experiences and views on this that perhaps I will share sometime, but for now I want to draw our attention to a scripture from the bible that you may or may not have heard off. For my friends out there who don’t believe I want you to know I’m not sharing this for any other reason that to present an idea of what love is and hopefully inspire us all to perhaps identify that area in our own lives that perhaps needs us to give or receive a little love.
The verse that I thought was so fitting to share is from 1 corinthian 13 and it’s from the Passion Translation. It says;
Love is large and incredibly patient.[a] Love is gentle and consistently kind to all. It refuses to be jealous[b] when blessing comes to someone else. Love does not brag about one’s achievements nor inflate its own importance. 5 Love does not traffic in shame and disrespect, nor selfishly seek its own honor. Love is not easily irritated[c] or quick to take offense.[d] 6 Love joyfully celebrates honesty[e] and finds no delight in what is wrong.[f] 7 Love is a safe place of shelter,[g] for it never stops believing the best for others.[h] Love never takes failure as defeat, for it never gives up.
8 Love never stops loving.[i] It extends beyond the gift of prophecy, which eventually fades away.[j] It is more enduring than tongues, which will one day fall silent. Love remains long after words of knowledge are forgotten.[k]
So perhaps today you need to give a little more love to yourself or to those around you, or perhaps you will be in a place today or tomorrow when you will be presented with the option to show love (perhaps even where we may think or perceive that it’s not deserved). The truth is we cannot truly know whether it’s deserved or not, and since it’s not our place to judge, choosing to love is always a good idea. We never know what someone is going through, and if you are finding yourself in a anxious or dark spot then let me speak to your heart for a moment. We cannot always control everything in life, but we can control and influence how we view and treat ourselves and others. This day is a gift so my heart is that you would stop beating yourself up for whatever expectations you have of yourself and others and look for the things to love about yourself and this world today. I know it can be hard to see in a place where everything feels dark and hopelessness begins to set, but my friend, just as the clouds break and the sun rises and sets, so will everything change under the sun. If you are struggling to find help today from those around you, then look again, look further and shout from the hills because you are worth loving and hearing, and holding on to for another day.
Make sure you tell someone you love them today, and practice it everyday. Be kind and love always my friend.
